Music Enriching Lives of People with Dementia

On April 18th National Public Radio (NPR) reported on a documentary titled Alive Inside that shows the amazing affects that music from an ipod with personalized playlists have on people with various forms of dementia including Alzheimer’s.  The report titled For Elders With Dementia, Musical Awakenings, discusses how that in many cases even when dementia ravages many parts of the brain, long term memory of music often remains.  When that memory of youth is tapped there is often an “awakening” and transformative effect.  The video below has gone viral and demonstrates how successful this therapy can be.
