Holidays Cause Elevated Stress on Alzheimer’s Caregivers

While most people have elevated stress levels during the holiday season, the toll can be especially heightened for family member caregivers of Alzheimer’s patients. In Florida, nearly 1 million people are caregivers to Alzheimer’s patients. As the illness progresses and the victim loses brain function, close family members become strangers and eventually unpaid caregivers.
According to an article in the Orlando Sentinel titled “Holiday stress amplified for Alzheimer’s caregivers” Caregivers provide $13.8 billion in uncompensated care in Florida. Nationally, I in 10 Alzheimer’s caregivers are forced to stop working.  Most report high stress levels that often lead to health issues. The additional pressures of the holiday’s can exacerbate those issues.
The number of Alzheimer’s patients in Florida is expected to rise to 590,000 by 2025. The costs in human resource and money will be enormous. The state has put a task force together to address the cost issues; however it will not deal with the human toll on family care giving.
